Microchipping FAQs

What Is A Pet Microchip?

A pet microchip is a tiny device that is implanted under the skin of your pet and contains information about you and your pet. This data can help you find your lost or stolen pet so it can be returned home. They are only about the size of a small grain of rice, but microchips are very powerful. They can have a significant advantage over ordinary ID tags because they can do the following:

  • Provide additional identification - When your pet is found, a shelter or veterinarian can scan the chip to read its unique code. The vet will then be able to contact you immediately and tell you where they are.
  • Permanent - Unlike typical identification methods, a microchip is permanent. It cannot fall off, be removed from the animal, or be worn down by your pet’s collar.
  • Can last a lifetime - Microchips are very durable and can last up to 15 years. The microchip will still work if your pet is 10 pounds or 100 pounds.

Studies prove that pets are more likely to get reunited with their owners if they have a microchip inserted. This simple task can save you from a disheartening situation.

What Is A Microchip Scanner?

A microchip scanner is a handheld device that emits a radio frequency that can detect whether or not your pet has been microchipped. Most animal shelters and veterinary care practices have access to these scanners that can help identify your pet should it become lost.

How Are Microchips Inserted In My Pet?

Inserting a microchip in your pet is a minimally invasive procedure that works much like a vaccination. During the process, we will insert a microchip between the shoulder blades of your pet. The procedure is quick and painless and most pets will not even notice it. Once implanted, the microchips are invisible to the naked eye and cannot be felt by your pet. It only takes a few minutes and then you have protection for your pet that lasts a lifetime.
